Join the Choral Society of Durham
The Choral Society of Durham invites singers in our community who share our love of choral music to audition for our upcoming season. Auditions for new members in the fall of 2022 will be held Monday, September 5 and 12. Use the audition form below to sign up.
Qualifications for acceptance include:
- The ability to learn music independently
- Accurate pitch
- Enough volume to be heard in a large choir
- The ability to blend well with other voices
Once you have auditioned, you should attend all rehearsals until you receive the audition results, since any rehearsals missed before being accepted will count as absences. Audition results are normally sent by email after all auditions have been completed.
To schedule an audition, please complete and submit the audition form.

The Choral Society traditionally rehearses on Monday evenings during the concert season (September to May), from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled during concert weeks and occasionally at other times during the semester.
As was the case last year, CSD will require, starting with the first rehearsal of the season (Sept. 12), that singers who wish to attend rehearsals in person be fully vaccinated and to wear a mask while singing. As the season progresses, the CSD Health Committee will continue to gather and assess various health data in order to help determine whether these precautions can be safely eased or possibly even need to be further strengthened. We recognize that rehearsing in-person has tremendous appeal for many singers, but we also want to be very careful to protect everyone’s health.
Singers may take part in rehearsals via Zoom occasionally, or, with the permission of the Artistic Director, on a regular basis. Attendance is taken for both in-person singers and those on Zoom. Members are expected to attend each rehearsal in its entirety and should not miss more than 2 rehearsals per semester. Zoom recordings of the rehearsals are also made available for later use by any CSD singer. All singers are expected to learn much of the music on their own, with the help of online recordings, note-learning sites, and any audio files provided by the Choral Society.
The 2022-2023 concert schedule is structured similarly to those in past pre-Covid seasons, with three major concerts, beginning with a holiday concert and ending with a May performance of a major work for choir and orchestra: Bach’s B minor Mass.

Dues for the 2022-23 season will be $150. Dues may be paid in 2 installments, September and January. Dues for new members joining in the spring of 2023 will be $75. Scholarship funds are available to members for whom payment of dues constitutes a hardship. You may request assistance by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org or calling the CSD office at 919-560-2733.
Members in good standing are not required to re-audition each year, except at the conductor’s discretion. Members who have taken leave for two or more consecutive semesters must re-audition.
Members meeting all requirements (e.g., maintaining acceptable attendance) may return each semester without re-auditioning.
